How to Generate Asset Tag Barcodes With AssetFrog

3 min read

We’ve released a new feature in AssetFrog which allows you to generate barcodes for your fixed assets directly from within the AssetFrog app.

This means that you can generate your barcodes, print them off and stick them to your assets. You can then use AssetFrog’s inbuilt barcode scanner to pull up assets effortlessly.

Why should we stick asset barcodes to our assets?

It may seem like some effort sticking barcodes to our assets, however it is an amazing way to catalogue and keep track of them.

Putting a barcode on an asset will essentially assign it what we call an “Asset Tag ID”. This is an ID which you come up with that uniquely identifies each asset. An example ID might be “AST00001”, technically it can be anything but having numbers on the end which increment up is recommended.

In an office setting, each screen, keyboard, mouse and PC should all have barcodes attached to them so you can quickly find out who’s missing that mouse you found in the lunch room.

Not only does it make your life easier, but it can fix your IT guys, accountants and facility guy’s headaches too. When you call in your IT guy you can refer to each asset as their Asset Tag ID instead of “Rachel’s computer”.

On a larger scale, Asset Tag ID barcodes can help with cataloguing and maintenance. You can easily see which asset belongs where, and which ones are assigned or missing.

Finding and using the barcode generator feature in AssetFrog

You can find the barcode generator module by clicking on “Create Barcodes” in the sidebar.

Once on the Generate Barcodes page you will see a few fields which you can fill out to customise your barcodes.

Tag Prefix:
This is the letters at the beginning of your tags. An example of this may be AST (for asset) or IT (for Information Technology) for example AST0001

How many letters in tag:
How many characters you want your barcode to have. Some examples are – 8 which which would create AST00001 or 5 which would create AST01. The Tag Prefix is included in the number of characters

Start at what number?:
If you are just starting out, setting this to 1 is the way to go. Say you have previously printed 127 asset tags and stuck them to your assets and you are now up to 128, so enter 128. This is the number that goes at the end for example AST01234

How many barcodes to create:
How many barcodes you would like to print. If you are starting at number 1 and set this number to 36 you’ll get a PDF with barcodes 0001 – 0036

Will generate tags:
Here you can preview an example of your tags before you print

When you have filled out your desired requirements, press the Generate Asset Tag Barcodes button and AssetFrog will generate an A4 PDF with your new barcodes.

You can simply download and print this page. Cut out the tags and stick them on your assets.

Scanning barcodes with AssetFrog

Now that you have stuck these barcodes to your assets, you can use the AssetFrog scan function to enter these assets quickly and easily.
